DIRECTOR’S BIO: Nickson Fong is a director, VFX supervisor, computer graphics artist, and the first and only Singaporean to receive an Academy Award. He attended the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, and then moved to Tokyo and began his career with Japanese game developer Future Pirates. After one of his short films gained attention at SIGGRAPH, Fong relocated to Los Angeles and began working in visual effects.
His credits in VFX include major Hollywood films THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS, THE SCORPION KING, THE PATRIOT, STUART LITTLE, THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR, GODZILLA and STARSHIP TROOPERS. Fong is known for co-inventing and publishing, along with two others, an animating technique known as the “Pose Space Deformation,” which makes animated characters’ features more lifelike. This algorithm has been used widely in many films, including Spider-Man (2002) and Avatar (2009). Fong was awarded with an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Awards at the Academy of Sci-Tech Awards presentation. Nickson has just completed BASHIRA, which he directed, produced, co-wrote (story), co-edited and also acted as VFX supervisor.
