DIRECTOR’S BIO: Johnny Coffeen is a Cuban American director whose work leans toward surreal, psychologically driven storytelling and is grounded in a highly collaborative process. Early in his career, he worked in the editing room on the SXSW Grand Jury Prize–winning Short Term 12, an experience that shaped his approach to performance, rhythm, and storytelling. While attending the David Lynch Graduate School of Cinematic Arts, Coffeen received the Student Academy Award for his work as a director, and his master’s thesis film, The Swan Girl, later premiered at David Lynch’s Festival of Disruption, where it earned a personal endorsement from Lynch himself: “Pretty damn good.” His short films The Circle Game, The False Mirror, and The Sleeper’s Twin (his third collaboration with renowned stop-motion artist John Frame) further refined his voice, leading to his debut feature The Avalanche.
