A FESTIVAL OF OPPORTUNITY & EXPOSURE
At FilmQuest, we have several categories in which you may submit your film, including some that you may not find everywhere else. We even have unique competitions that we encourage you to explore. Discover which category fits best for your film below.
FEATURE FILMS
Got yourself a feature film? Is it a genre film? Then we want to see it! Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, whatever, we want you to send it our way! If it’s a cop drama, we probably don’t want it… unless it’s a cop drama involving time travel. You get the idea. (Runtime: 41 minutes or more)
SHORT FILMS
So you have a short film? Is it a genre film? Is it 40 minutes or less? Then we want to see it! Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi, whatever, we want you to send it our way! If it’s a coming of age story in a high school, we probably don’t want to see it… unless it’s a coming of age story involving zombies. You got this. (Runtime: 40 minutes or less)
ANIMATED FILMS
Have you animated a film? Is it genre based? Then let’s rock this, and send it our way! As long as it’s based in horror, sci-fi, or fantasy, then it’s all good. Of course, we don’t want to see anything with penguins in it… unless those penguins happen to be post-apocalyptic killing machines! Everyone would love that! (If you have an animated film, this is where you’ll submit, regardless of whether or not its a feature, short, etc.)
STUDENT FILMS
Are you a student who has a film? Is it genre based? If so, ignore the other categories. This is where we want you to submit, no matter what it is you’re sending us; feature, short, music video, etc. Just remember, we’re looking for a fantasy, horror, or sci-fi type of film. None of that political thriller stuff here… unless it’s about the overthrow of an evil Martian government. We’d love to see that! (If you have a student film, this is where you’ll submit, regardless of whether or not it’s a feature, short, etc.)
FAN FILMS
Make a fan film? While most festivals would turn their noses up at you, we at FilmQuest celebrate what you’ve achieved. So if you’ve made a fan film for Star Trek, Gears of War, Game of Thrones, etc. we want to see it! We are going to assume that no one has made a feature length fan film yet, so we’re going to limit our submissions to shorts. (Runtime: 40 minutes or less)
MUSIC VIDEOS
Make a band a music video? Is it genre based? If so, let’s rock this bad boy and send it our way! Remember, it needs to be in fantasy, sci-fi, or horror. We don’t care how big or small the band is, or if its been distributed, whatever. We’re down to get down. Just don’t send us a Taylor Swift video… unless she’s got a goat head. Then we want that! (Runtime: 10 minutes or less)
TV/WEB SERIES
Got yourself a TV show or Web Series? Maybe a YouTube channel? Is it genre based? Then let’s have a look! Upload an episode that is based in sci-fi, fantasy, or horror and you’ll be good to go. Just don’t send us something about 1950’s diners… unless those diners have werewolves! All about that, we are. (Runtime: 30 minutes or less)
COMMERCIALS/ADVERTISEMENTS
Let’s do something unusual. We want to see your best commercials and advertisements that are genre based. Send them our way, because at FilmQuest, this is one of the few film festival that embrace ads. Just make sure they’re based in horror, sci-fi, or fantasy, and we’re solid. What we don’t want to see is an ad for chewing gum… unless that chewing gum explodes into bubbles made of millions of dancing unicorns. Then we’re so down for it. (Runtime: 5 minutes and below)
SCREENPLAY COMPETITION – FEATURES
Do you have an unproduced screenplay? Is it genre based? Then let’s have a look! We’re looking for FEATURE screenplays in this submission category, and those that are based in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Horror. No time for romantic comedies here… unless they involve alien love. Savvy? (41 pages and above)
SCREENPLAY COMPETITION – SHORTS
Do you have an unproduced screenplay? Is it genre based? Then let’s have a look! We’re looking for SHORT screenplays in this submission category, and those that are based in Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Horror. No noir films here… unless they’re about robots who dream of electric sheep. Then we’re digging it. (40 pages and less)
FILMQUEST EXPRESS
A week long filmmaking extravaganza. Two weeks before the start of the festival, filmmakers will form teams by which they will have one week to complete a short film. Length, genre, and elements required for each film will be revealed the day the competition starts. All films will be screened at FilmQuest. A Grand Prize will be awarded at an awards ceremony, along with several other awards, exclusive to FilmQuestExpress. Check back regularly for details. Competition is open globally. (3 minutes maximum)
MISSION STATEMENT
FilmQuest is a festival of the Fantastic founded by filmmakers, for filmmakers. It is our goal to bring you an experience unlike any other that not only rewards but advances your career as a filmmaker and an artist. It is our hope that FilmQuest helps to lay a foundation for new and upcoming filmmakers, furthers the careers of more established professionals, inspires its patrons, and can be a home for filmmakers for years to come.
ESTABLISHED IN 2014
FilmQuest begins its journey by aiming high, as it lays down strong foundations in looking towards creating the greatest Fantastic film festival in the world. As the film festival branch of the newly founded FantasyCon, FilmQuest is immediately given opportunity to have access to the best genre artists, performers, filmmakers, and writers in the world.
First Edition: 30 June – 5 July, 2014 in Salt Lake City.
Check back often to follow FilmQuest as it grows and builds its timeline.
FILMQUEST – PREPARE FOR THE FANTASTIC
FilmQuest is a festival of films within the Fantastic genres of filmmaking such as fantasy, horror, sci-fi, etc. It has been designed specifically to cater to the empowerment of the filmmaker through various events, awards, swag, connections, and more.
In creating the festival, we thought long and hard about what it is that makes a festival great. We asked ourselves the tough questions. What we’ve come up with is, we believe, a festival experience that is the kind most filmmakers dream about.
PRIZES & AWARDS
We’ve created a festival that gives away awe-inspiring awards, fills your bag with the swag a pirate would be envious of, connects you to other filmmakers and celebrities in ways that encourages future collaboration, and offers an event to explore that will be talked about for years to come in FantasyCon.
Prizes include a $5,000 Grand Prize (Best of Fest), a $2,500 2nd Place Best of Fest Prize, and a $1,000 Third Place Best of Fest Prize. These monies will be given to the filmmakers specifically to help you finance your next film project. On top of this, winners will receive our FilmQuest trophy designed exclusively for FilmQuest and produced by the world famous Adonis Bronze, making what we are sure will soon become one of the most coveted awards on the festival circuit, and this is just the beginning.
GRAND JURY & SELECTION COMMITTEE
Major industry professionals are already planning to be a part of the first Grand Jury, which will award our filmmakers in over 30 individual categories. Our selection committee is made up of a group of industry professionals from various fields such as directors, actors, producers, professors, writers, animators, casting directors, and more.
FANTASYCON – JOIN THE ADVENTURE
FilmQuest itself is the festival branch of the upcoming FantasyCon, a convention that puts the fantasy experience of the patrons first. It is an interactive convention, where dragons, magic and battle literally come to life. Just as FantasyCon is a celebration of all things Fantasy, from horror to adventure, so is FilmQuest a celebration of all things Fantastic in film.
EXPLORE
We encourage you to explore our continuously updated website for new information and updates, such as who is on the Grand Jury, the Selection Committee, the Official Selections, venues, and more.
Finally, we ask you to join us in the journey for this, our first year, and to help us create a rich history that all who become a part of FilmQuest will talk about for years to come, and will prove to be a touching stone for their careers.
