THE FILMQUEST CTHULHU TROPHY
The FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy has been designed by Ryan Peterson, an extremely talented and gifted artist and designer who worked with Rick Baker on several high-profile projects, including Men in Black, X-Men, and Benjamin Button. Specifically he built and sculpted the rotting Edgar makeup for Men in Black, conceptualized Beast for the X-Men films, and also designed the creepy Benjamin Button baby for the film. Ryan went into the heart of the Cthulhu mythos, and created a unique vision of the Cosmic God that has rarely been seen.
Society Awards, the same company who makes the Golden Globes and Emmy’s, manufactured the award exclusively for FilmQuest. After taking Peterson’s beautiful design, Society Awards built a 12 inch tall, brushed silver pewter award that weighs over 3 pounds. It is a gorgeous display of artistry and craftsmanship, of true collaboration at work.
In 2024, we introduced the FilmQuest Golden Cthulhu Trophy, which is awarded to our overall Grand Prize Short Film award winner. This winner is decided by taking the winners of each of the major short film categories (comedy, foreign, fantastic & beyond, fantasy, horror, midnight, sci-fi, and Utah shorts), and picking an overall winner from those winners. The 2024 version was a solid gold award, with it evolving into a black based award to give more pop to the overall design in 2025. In 2026, the festival will begin awarding both the Best Feature Film and Grand Prize Short Film the Golden Cthulhu.
We couldn’t be any more proud of the FilmQuest Cthulhu Trophy and the great work all artists put into making our vision a reality. We believe this is one of the finest awards in the entire industry that will only grow in stature and prestige in the years to come, and we absolutely cannot wait for filmmakers to take them home.
